The critical component of this calculation involves multiplying the cell value by 24 (the number of hours in a day) and then multiplying that result by 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour). Finally, the VALUE function is used to ensure the final output is treated strictly as a numeric value, which is crucial if the calculation result retains any residual time formatting applied by Excel during the intermediate steps.

Setting Up Your Data: Ensuring Proper Time Formatting


Before applying the conversion formula, it is imperative to ensure that the source data is correctly recognized by Excel as a time duration.   • A duration of 26 hours, 14 minutes, and 22 seconds is converted to 94,462 seconds, demonstrating the formula’s ability to handle durations exceeding 24 hours.
  • A duration of 13 hours, 30 minutes, and 0 seconds is converted precisely to 48,600 seconds.
