When dealing with charts that contain numerous categories or lengthy temporal indicators, the horizontal alignment of axis labels often leads to significant overlap, rendering the visualization confusing and ultimately unreadable. This issue is particularly prevalent in time-series plots or categorical bar charts where the labels crowd the horizontal axis.

Implementing Rotation using the Custom Angle Setting
Within the Alignment section of the Format Axis panel, locate the Custom angle input box. This setting allows you to input a precise degree of rotation for the selected axis labels. The value entered here dictates the angle relative to the horizontal plane. Positive angles rotate the text counter-clockwise, while negative angles rotate it clockwise.
To ensure maximum readability and a professional appearance, the most common rotation angle is 45 degrees. To achieve a typical upward-sloping text orientation (reading from bottom-left to top-right, which is generally aesthetically pleasing and space-saving), you should input a negative value. We recommend starting with -45 degrees. Type this value directly into the Custom angle box and press Enter or simply click outside the box to apply the change immediately to the chart.

While a -45 degree rotation is often the optimal solution, the best angle depends entirely on the length of your specific axis labels and the density of your data points. If -45 degrees still results in minor overlap, consider increasing the rotation magnitude, perhaps to -60 degrees, or even -90 degrees for purely vertical text alignment. Vertical text (90 degrees or -90 degrees) maximizes horizontal space but can sometimes strain the reader’s neck, so it should be used only when absolutely necessary.
Another control within the Alignment section worth exploring is Text direction. This dropdown allows you to quickly select predefined rotations, such as “Rotate all text 90°” or “Stacked.” Although the Custom angle provides more granular control, these presets can offer rapid solutions if you need immediate rotation without fine-tuning. For instance, the “Stacked” option is excellent for labels that are extremely long and cannot fit even when rotated, as it breaks the text into multiple lines.
Always remember that effective data visualization prioritizes clarity. After rotating the labels, take a moment to review the entire chart.
